Indian Chess Prodigy praggnanandhaa’s Inspiring Journey to Becoming the Youngest Chess World Cup Finalist

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa is an Indian chess grandmaster. He is a chess prodigy, becoming an international master at the age of 10, the youngest at the time to do so, and a grandmaster at 12, the second-youngest at the time to do so.

He was born on August 10, 2005, in Chennai, India. He started playing chess at age five and quickly showed a talent for the game. He won the World Youth Chess Championship U8 title in 2013 and the World Youth Chess Championship U10 title in 2015.

In 2018, he became a grandmaster at 12 years, ten months, and 13 days, making him the second-youngest grandmaster in history. He broke the record set by Sergey Karjakin, who became a grandmaster at 12 years, seven months, and 28 days.

Praggnanandhaa has continued to impress in recent years. He won the Sinquefield Cup Rapid Tournament in 2022 and defeated then-world champion Magnus Carlsen in a rapid game at the Airthings Masters Rapid Chess Tournament in the same year.

He is currently ranked number 29 in the world by FIDE. He is the youngest Indian grandmaster and one of the world’s most promising young chess players.

In the Chess World Cup 2023, 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa became India’s youngest player to reach the final. Praggnanandhaa defeated Fabiano Caruana in tie-breaks in the Chess World Cup 2023 semi-final. He has also become the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to reach the final in Chess World Cup history. In the final, he lost the match with former classical World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen.
