Numbers in Words in English
We all know that mathematics is all about numbers. Every concept/chapter we learn in Mathematics from our childhood has numbers included in it. Earlier, we use Roman numerals to represent the numbers. Numbers such as 1-I, 2-II, 3-III, 4-IV, and so on. But in the current system, we spell out numbers in the English language. Therefore, in this article, we will learn how to convert the numbers into words in the English language since English is the most common language used across the world, specifically for education.
Now let’s see how numbers are in the word forms in the English Language. For example, 100 is written as One hundred, 1000 is written as One thousand, 100000 is written as One Lakh etc. with the spelling. Similarly, each number is written in the form of words based on the place value system, such as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on.
There are different types of numbers that students can learn, natural numbers, whole numbers, rational numbers, etc. All the mentioned numbers are represented in the form of words with the help of a place value and face value form.
As mentioned, any number can be written in the form of words with the help of place value. Now let’s see what place value is.
Place value is the value of every digit in a number. Example, 5 in 530 represents 5 hundred, or 500; 3 represents Thirty. Similarly, 5 in 5,300 represents 5 thousand, or 5,000; 3 represents 3 hundred or 300
Place value is represented by one’s place, tens place, hundred places, thousand place, lakh place, etc. depends upon the number of digits in a number.
The place value in one’s place has numbers from 1 to 9. They are written in words as, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine.
The number starts at tens place is 10 and move from 11 to 19. Ten is the least number in the tens place. The numbers are written in tens place in words as, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen and nineteen.
After 19 the number next comes is 20, In the number 20 – “2” lies in the tens place, then the numbers follow the pattern 21,22…29. and are written in words as twenty-one, twenty two, etc.
Similarly, tens place is filled with the numbers 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and are read as thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety and so on. As shown above for “20 -Twenty” the preceding numbers follow the pattern 31,32,33, …etc. and are written in words as thirty-one, thirty-two, etc.
Now let’s see how to write any number in words with example.
Write 65 in words.
Solution: In number 65, one’s place is occupied with 5, so there are 5 ones, and tens place is also occupied with 6, so there are 6 tens. So 6 tens and 5 ones are equal to 65. Or we can write, 65 as ‘Sixty -Five’ in words.
