The anti-defection was passed in the Parliament in 1985 and came into effect on March 1, 1985, through the 52nd Amendment of the Constitution. According to the law, the legislators may be disqualified on the grounds of defection based on a petition by the other member of the House by the Presiding Officer of a legislature.
