History behind teachers day in India

As the traditional proverb goes, the destiny of a country lies in the hands of its children and teachers. As mentors, teachers can mould students into future leaders who shape the destiny of India. They perform a prominent role in our lives to become flourishing in career and business. They assist us in becoming a good human being, a better member of society and an exemplary citizen of the nation. Teacher’s Day is celebrated to acknowledge the difficulties, challenges and the unique role that teachers play in our lives.

In India, we celebrate Teachers Day on September 5, whereas the World Teachers’ Day, also known as International Teachers Day, is an international day held annually on October 5. The Worlds first Teachers’ Day was celebrated on October 5, 1994, that commemorates the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

Importance of Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ Day is one such occasion at which students and teachers evenly look forth. The Day is important for the students as it gives them a chance to understand the struggles put in by their teachers to assure that they get fitting education. Similarly, teachers also look forth to Teachers’ Day celebration as their efforts get acknowledged and admired by students and other bureaus as well.

Why Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday is celebrated as Teachers’ Day?

September 5 is celebrated as Teachers Day every year in India to honour the renowned scholar, recipient of Bharat Ratna, first Vice- President and second President of independent India Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was born on September 5, 1888. He was one of the eminent scholars of the 20th century on comparative religion and philosophy. His philosophy reflected the ideologies of Advaita Vedanta and its reinterpretation for contemporary understanding.

In 1965, some of the notable students of Late Dr S. Radhakrishnan organised a gathering to pay homage to that Great Teacher of repute. During the conference, in his speech, Dr Radhakrishnan expressed his deep reservation regarding his birth anniversary celebration and said that instead of observing his birthday distinctly, it would be his proud privilege, if September 5 was commemorated as Teachers’ day”. From then onwards, September 5 has been observed as Teachers Day, in India.
