You might have seen cars being held up in Car service station or changing of car tiers after sudden wears and tears on the family road trip with a hydraulic jack. This Jack allows for cleaning the lower part of the vehicle. One can lift a hefty weight with little effort by using a hydraulic jack.
What is Hydraulic Jack, and how can it lift such massive weights? How does it work? Can we do a science project for kids from this? Is it possible to make one at home?
Yes, it can be one of the best science projects ideas for students. But before we start, we would like to let you know on what principle does it works and what is a hydraulic Jack.
What is Hydraulic Jack:
A jack, or hydraulic car jack, is a device that uses force to lift heavy loads. The primary tool by which power applied varies, depending on the particular type of Jack.
Hydraulic jacks tend to have higher lifting capacities. Typical forms of hydraulic jacks include bottle jacks and floor jacks.
PRINCIPLE: Hydraulic Jack works on the principle of PASCAL LAW.

Steps to construct a hydraulic jack
Step 1: At first, set two long wooden columns on top of the wooden base by using a strong adhesive. These two should act as pillars for the fat (big) syringe. Ensure that the gap between them is wide enough for the fat syringe. Test it before you glue them on the wooden base. Now glue the other two wooden columns on the side of the wooden base on the opposite side right next to the edges, you will get a structure of four pillars.
Step 2: Now take both small syringes and insert the ball bearings in them (one in each), once done. Take one syringe and make a ½ cm wide hole near its mouth. Now take another syringe to make ¼ cm wide hole near its mouth.
Step 3: (Assembling the parts) Take the syringe with a smaller hole and insert 2inch refill, take the other syringe with lager hole and insert a 6inch plastic tube into its hole. Now, 6inch plastic tube joined to the mouth of the first syringe of 2inch refill. We will be joining an 8inch plastic tube to this refill later on in the assembly pump, and this tube will be added in a mug of water afterward.
Step 4: Now take the second syringe with its mouth open and attach a foot long plastic tube into its mouth. This syringe is a pump, and this tube will be inserted in a mug of water later.
Step 5: Now, with cutting player bend the bicycle spoke into an L – shape, leaving a gap of 1inch. Make another bend & it becomes a U. Make another bend & you will have a rectangular-shaped bicycle spoke bracket, press the ends tightly. Make sure it is big enough to completely hold the two wooden columns that you had stuck earlier on the side of the rectangular wooden base (you can also use a tape to attach them tightly on the two wooden columns).
Step 6: Now back to a simple step after placing the brackets on the lower wooden columns back to simple step. Invert the big syringe and stick it upside down between the two top columns on the wooden base. Now take out the circular part of the CD base in the center and paste it tightly over the syringes handle as well.
Step 7: Now, we ensure the syringe assembly to the two columns
With spokes. Take the syringe with a long pipe coming out of its mouth fitted between the two spokes & tie the syringe with the copper wire around one column now take the second syringe as you can see we have attached a long pipe to the refill already, insert this long pipe between the two spokes and tie the syringe with some wire as well.
Step 8: Now take the long pipe coming out of refill and attached to the mouth of the big syringe secured in the opposite side. Once done, take the remaining long tube and inserted in the mug of water.
Step 9: Put the CD base on the fat syringe top followed by some really heavy books; now start pumping the syringe with the tube in water. This works like a pump; just by pumping it you will be able to lift all the books on the top of the fat syringe.
